Scaling and Root Planing in Riverside, CA
Scaling and root planing, often called a deep cleaning, is the most common non-surgical treatment for gum disease. While a regular cleaning focuses on the teeth above the gumline, scaling and root planing removes bacteria, plaque, and tartar from deep below the gums and smooths the root surfaces so your gums can heal. At Riverside Tooth Co., Dr. Sandhu uses this proven treatment to help patients in Riverside, CA stop gum disease and keep their natural teeth.
Request an AppointmentWhen Is Scaling and Root Planing Needed?
Healthy gums fit snugly around each tooth. When gingivitis progresses to periodontitis, the gums begin to pull away, creating pockets where bacteria collect and tartar builds up out of reach of your toothbrush. During your exam, we measure these pockets. Pockets deeper than about 4 millimeters, along with bleeding, bone loss on x-rays, or loose teeth, often mean a deep cleaning is needed.
What Happens During Treatment?
Scaling
After the area is numbed, ultrasonic and hand instruments are used to remove plaque and hardened tartar from the tooth surfaces and from inside the gum pockets, all the way down to the roots.
Root Planing
Next, the root surfaces are carefully smoothed. Rough spots on the roots attract bacteria, so smoothing them helps the gums reattach to the teeth and makes it harder for plaque to return. In some cases, a localized antibiotic is placed in deep pockets to help control infection.
Treatment is often completed in two visits, with one side of the mouth treated at each appointment.
Keeping Gum Disease Under Control
After scaling and root planing, we schedule a follow-up visit to measure your gum pockets and check healing. Ongoing periodontal maintenance cleanings, along with daily brushing and flossing, help prevent bacteria from returning. If you smoke, quitting greatly improves healing. Request an AppointmentScaling and Root Planing FAQs
Is scaling and root planing painful?
The area is numbed with local anesthetic, so most patients feel only pressure. Gums may be tender for a few days afterward.
How is a deep cleaning different from a regular cleaning?
A regular cleaning removes plaque above and just below the gumline. Scaling and root planing cleans deep inside gum pockets and smooths the roots.
How long does the procedure take?
Each session typically takes one to two hours. Many patients have the treatment split into two visits.
What should I expect after treatment?
Mild soreness and sensitivity are normal for a few days. Rinse with warm salt water, brush gently, and avoid very hot or spicy foods.
Will I need more than one deep cleaning?
Most patients need only one round, followed by periodontal maintenance cleanings every three to four months to keep gum disease under control.
Can scaling and root planing save loose teeth?
In many cases, yes. Removing infection allows the gums to tighten around the teeth, which can help stabilize teeth that were beginning to loosen.
Why can’t I use the new patient special if I need a deep cleaning?
The new patient special includes a general cleaning and is not valid in cases of periodontal disease. We will review costs with you before any deep cleaning.
